He has two children, Ella aged 7 & Levi aged 5, who keep him from enjoying his hobbies of writing, cinema and travel. Paul has been involved in major campaigns in his short time on the Council, such as plastic and cardboard recycling, road safety and fighting against overdevelopment in Chorlton. Cllr Simon Ashley
Councillor Simon Ashley was born and brought up in Manchester, attending Holy Trinity on Moston Lane; North Manchester for Boys and Shena Simon Sixth Form College. He is married to Briege, who is an Area Manager for the Co-op. They have two young children, Niall, 6 and Niamh, 4 in July, who attend Sacred Heart in Gorton. He is a graduate of Lancaster University where he got a degree in Politics, was Furness College President in 1986 and the Student Union President in 1987/8. He has represented the Gorton South Ward of Manchester City Council since 1992. The Ward stretches from Chapel St in Levenshulme across to Bickerdike Court in Longsight and Debdale Park in Gorton. Simon has been Leader of the 33-strong Liberal Democrat Council Group on Manchester City Council since 1997, and heads the team on the Council's Executive Committee. He is also Liberal Democrat Leader on the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities (AGMA) Council, and will become a board member of Eastlands once the Stock Transfer takes place in October 2008.

Councillor John Bridges is 46 and a graduate of Manchester University. He chairs the vital Citizenship and Inclusion Scrutiny Committee which covers crime and anti social behaviour issues. John has lived in Manchester since 1980. In his spare time he plays amateur football (VMFC), is a season ticket holder at Manchester City and is a Halle Concert Society member. John has worked in the North Sea, on the fish market at New Smithfield, as a postman in Levenshulme and in Finance at Manchester University. Cllr John Cameron
John Cameron is councillor for the Burnage ward, having won the seat for the Liberal Democrats, from Labour, for the first time in 2003. He was subsequently re-elected in 2004, along with fellow Liberal Democrats Iain Donaldson and Rodney Isherwood. John has campaigned for improved road safety in Burnage and Didsbury for years and has been pleased to see new pedestrian crossings over Kingsway and Burnage Lane, together with speed camera on Errwood Road and Kingsway and 20mph zones around the local schools implemented since he became a Councillor. However, he says that the work has only started and much more remains to be done. John is the chair of the Burnage Multi Agency Group, which is a voluntary group providing youth work in the community. He is also a school Governor at Ladybarn Primary School. He was the agent for John Leech MP during his successful 2005 general election campaign for Manchester Withington. John currently serves as the Chair of the Economy, Employment and Skills Overview and Scrutiny Committee. He holds a degree in Town and Country Planning from Manchester University and is a qualified nurse. John lives in Burnage with his partner, Sarah, and their daughter, Freya.

Cllr Abu Chowdhury
Abu now serves on the Licensing & Appeals Committee, as well as the Citizenship and Inclusion Scrutiny Committee. He was a member of the Community Regeneration Scrutiny Committee for two years, and of the Health Scrutiny Committee for a brief period. Abu recently retired from the Department of Work and Pensions, after 32 years service. He is Manchester's first Bengali Councillor, and has been active in the community in Rusholme and Longsight for many years. He serves Manchester as a longserving Magistrate and school governor, and was awarded the MBE in 2000. Abu is a member and former Chair of the Independent Advisory Group of Greater Manchester Police, providing a source of advice and independent scrutiny on all aspects of policing affecting the community in Greater Manchester.

John Commons is an active local community politician who has continually served since 1985 as an elected member representing the Levenshulme Ward on Manchester City Council. John Commons is the National Secretary/Chief Whip of the Liberal Democrat Group at the Local Government Association. Alec has been active in the community in Levenshulme for many years. Married for 40 years with a large family, he is a lifelong Manchester City supporter but watches with interest the results of the team from Trafford. Alec is an active member of the Friends of the Fallowfield Loop, Friends of Cringle Park and Friends of Highfield Country Park. He has helped to obtain government funding for a Youth Roots project in Levenshulme, which will involve recreational activities and educational conservation work with school children of all ages. Alec is also currently working with the Friends of Parks groups in Levenshulme to gain Local Nature Reserve status on Highfield and a Green Flag award for Cringle. First elected to represent Gorton North Ward in 1992, Iain now represents the Burnage Ward.
Iain is the Liberal Democrat Shadow Housing spokesperson. He has a track record of campaigning for minority communities, and on planning and environmental issues. He entered politics to get the Council to listen to local people, a battle that he says is always going to need to be fought. Iain was the Liberal Democrat candidate for Manchester Blackley in the 2005 General Election, achieving an excellent 7% swing to the Liberal Democrats. John is proud to live in and represent Whalley Range. His 5 years as a consultant surgeon at the Northern General Hospital, Sheffield completed 20 years of work in the NHS. It was during this time he first got involved in local politics. He then trained to become a priest in the Church of England and has recently retired as a chaplain at Hope Hospital, Salford. A lifelong Liberal, Rod did his National Service in the Cheshire Regiment in Cyprus and Egypt. Professionally Rod is a member of Chartered Institute of Personnel Development. Rodney has spoken in Council to support the Sustainable Communities Bill, which would boost local shopping centres such as Burnage and reverse the Government's Post Office closure policy. Marc was first elected to the City Council 1987 as member for the Rusholme Ward and served until 1991. He was re-elected in May 2000 and has represented the City Centre since 2000. He has been re-elected for the City centre ward in 2004 and 2008. His priorities are greening the city centre; improving the quality of life for city centre residents and making sure that residents get value for money from their Council tax.
He has served the Liberal Democrats in a variety of capacities. He was Chair of the Lib Dem Council Group from 2000-2004 also Liberal Democrat Finance Spokesperson from 2004 to 2008.
