By elections spell disaster for Labour in Manchester!4.07.20pm UTC (GMT +0000) Thu 29th Jul 2004 The significant progress made by the Liberal Democrats in the local and European elections on 10th June was built upon on the 24th July when they won Leicester South and almost won Birmingham Hodge Hill from Labour. Assuming the Leicester South result were duplicated in the Manchester, the Liberal Democrats would win Manchester Gorton and Manchester Withington and would be within 3% of Labour in Wythenshawe and Sale East. More staggering though is that if the Birmingham Hodge Hill swing were duplicated in the City then the Liberal Democrats would return MP's in Withington, Gorton, Wythenshawe-and-Sale East and Central, with Labour reduced to just one MP in the City. Manchester Liberal Democrat Leader, Cllr Simon Ashley, stated "These results show a sustained improvement in the national standing of the Liberal Democrats. On the swings shown in these two by-elections we would be looking at certainly two, and possibly four, Liberal Democrat MP's in the City of Manchester at the next General Election."
