Leese insult costs Manchester jobs say Lib Dems2.35.36pm UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 6th Dec 2005 Manchester's Labour Council Leader has been blamed for costing Manchester 100 jobs, following his outburst against the Chair of the Commission for Racial Equality. The CRE are now resisting a proposed move to Manchester. In October, Council Leader Richard Leese publically stated that he "did not give a damn" what Trevor Philips thinks. Now, we hear that Mr Philips has "strongly resisted" the new human rights watchdog being wholly based in Manchester, at the cost of 100 local jobs. Last month, Manchester Liberal Democrat Group Leader Cllr Simon Ashley criticised Cllr Leese's statement, saying, "For the Leader of the Council to insult the Chair of the Commission for Racial Equality in this way is unnecessary and undignified and will harm Manchester's reputation both within the CRE and more widely." Cllr Ashley said today, "I'm absolutely sure that Cllr Leese's statement didn't help our cause. Perhaps Cllr Leese should tone down the insults and "give a damn" what others think in future, especially when it means fewer jobs for Manchester people." Ends....
