Longsight Councillor Mohammed Sajjad gets Network Rail promise to stop Pigeon Muck

8.19.06pm UTC (GMT +0000) Thu 16th Feb 2006

Longsight Liberal Democrat Councillor Mohammed Sajjad has joined forces with local residents to banish piles of pigeon muck from pavements in Longsight.

The pigeons roost under the Railway Bridge over Kirkmanshulme Lane and their droppings pile up all over the pavements below. This can be very slippery, especially after rain, and is disgusting for any pedestrians passing below.

Network Rail, who own the bridge, have agreed to put nets under the bridge following pressure from residents and the local Liberal Democrats. These nets stop pigeons roosting and should solve the muck problem on those streets.

Councillor Mohammed Sajjad said:

"It is totally unacceptable for pedestrians to have to walk on pavements which are covered with pigeon muck. It is disgusting and a hazard to pedestrians who could easily slip on it and break a leg. I am also worried that the droppings could be a disease risk. That is why I asked for the bridge to be netted. I am delighted that this will now be done."

The bridge should be netted within the next few weeks.
