Manchester's Liberal Democrat Councillors, MP & MEP work hard all year round. We are fighting for better public services, and less waste & extravagance at the Town Hall.

Gorton Tesco Redevelopment comes a step closer

12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 26th Jun 2006

The building of a new Tesco in Gorton in Manchester will move a step closer on Wednesday when the Council will agree a Compulsory Purchase Order against the outstanding properties on the site not under Council Ownership. The Council have identified five such properties on the site.

Gorton local Councillor and Manchester Liberal Democrat Group Leader Simon Ashley today welcomed the plans:

"This CPO is necessary to keep to a tight deadline. If we want to start to refurbish the market building by October and start construction of the Tesco by next May, we can't hang about. This CPO will give the projected added urgency."

Gorton local Councillor Wendy Helsby added:

"Local people wants to see things happen as soon as is practical. This CPO will encourage traders who haven't come to an agreement with the Council to get on with it."

Ends.
