City Council Refuses to Help Residents out of Parking Nightmare

10.02.24pm UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 1st Aug 2006

Manchester's Labour-run City Council is refusing to take action to help people in a Burnage street who have found themselves in a car parking nightmare.

Residents of Lane End Road live directly opposite the new Tesco superstore and are finding it almost impossible to park in front of their own houses because customers arriving by car prefer to park on the road rather than drive the extra few feet into the official store car park.

The Liberal Democrat Councillors for Burnage Ward have asked many times for a Residents' Parking scheme to solve the problem, but they have been told that the City Council does not support Residents' Parking schemes. Councillor Iain Donaldson has challenged the Labour Executive Councillor in charge, Councillor Neil Swannick, to make an exception to this policy for Lane End Road, but he refused.

Councillor Iain Donaldson said:

"This problem is a total nightmare for residents who frequently cannot get into or out of their own driveways, or park in front of their own houses. Some are healthcare workers who really need access to their cars day and night. I am disgusted that the Labour politicians in Manchester see their policies as more important than helping people in such dire straits. Surely they can see that this is no ordinary situation."

"The council have put a big residents only parking scheme in around the City of Manchester Stadium (in the ward Cllr Swannick represents), so why can't they do the same in Burnage?" asked a furious Councillor Donaldson.
