Residential Road Ruined by Maddening Motorists6.08.00pm UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 28th Aug 2006 "What should be a quiet residential road, safe for adults and children alike, has become a nightmare for the residents because of the weight and speed of traffic using it", says Whalley Range Liberal Democrat Councillor John Grant. Kings Road in Chorlton is one of the roads on the Egerton Estate. This was a fine estate when it was built but residents feel the Town Hall bosses have forgotten it and taken no notice of what local people say. For many on this road life is ruined because it has become a rat-run with cars speeding along it at all hours of the day and night. It is 3 years since nearly every resident signed a petition calling on the council to do something. So far they haven't seen anything being done. Liberal Democrat Councillor John Grant said: "It doesn't surprise me that residents are so angry and frustrated. They can see the area going down. 20mph is plenty for cars in residential areas like this with measures put in place to ensure that this is enforceable. There is no reason why this road should be used apart from people going to or from houses. It ought to be quite safe for children but as a rat-run residents face speeding cars flying through all day long. I have asked the council's traffic department and the executive member for a report on the action the council has taken since local people presented their petition." Liberal Democrat Councillor John Grant concluded: "This traffic problem has also made the junction of this road with Withington Road a hazard. Local residents have called on the council to address this issue. I think a 20mph speed limit for the whole estate would discourage people from driving through, and make this junction safer in the process." End
