Lib Dems slam "Barmy" Boys school Plan for Levenshulme High.12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Thu 23rd Nov 2006 Levenshulme High School Governor and local Liberal Democrat Councillor Keith Whitmore has branded Labour's plans to set up two single-sex schools on the same site as "barmy and the worst possible outcome for local children." The Council have been reviewing secondary education across Manchester. They have studied the future of single-sex education, and whether or not it should be abolished in favour of co-educational schools. Both types of school will remain across the city. However, with the support of only 11% of parents at the school, the Council are proposing to establish both a boys and a girls school on the same site. These plans have been rejected by the Levenshulme High School governors as the "worst of both worlds", especially as the proposal involves building on the school playing fields and remodelling the existing buildings. The Council claim they will be two separate schools, but they will have one overall Head Teacher, one Governing Body, shared sports facilities, shared break times and assemblies. Cllr Whitmore said: "This scheme looks like it has been done on the back of an envelope. By coming up with a proposal that is only supported by 11% of parents, Labour are not listening to what local people are saying." Ends
