Cllr Iain Donaldson Demands Action on Tesco's 24-hour Bright Lights

Tesco have received a clear indication from local Councillors that the light pollution from their store in Burnage must be tackled or the City Council will look to using new legislation to force them to take action.

Speaking at today's meeting of the City Council, Burnage Councillor Iain Donaldson highlighted the severe problems that residents on Lane End Road are having as a result of being effectively kept in daylight 24 hours a day, seven days a week by the store.

Local councillors met with Tesco last week and were assured that they would look into the situation, but Cllr Donaldson pointed out that "we have been receiving such assurances from Tesco since the store was first built."

He said:

"There is new legislation on light pollution that has not yet been tried. We feel that this situation is so severe for residents that if the thicker blinds that we have requested together with turning the lights down at night time is not implemented voluntarily by Tesco, then this should become a pilot case."
