Burnage Councillor Iain Donaldson Condemns Council Delays on Burnage Shops Facelift

Lib Dem Councillor for Burnage Iain Donaldson has hit out at Manchester City Council for huge delays to a much-needed scheme to improve the shopping area on Lane End Road and Burnage Lane. The scheme, which is to be paid for by money from Tesco as part of the conditions on getting planning permission for their new Burnage superstore, will bring improvements to the pavements round the shops, as well as new street furniture and bollards to stop cars parking on the pavements.

Cllr Donaldson, who is the Lib Dem spokesperson on Community Regeneration, spoke out today (Wednesday, 7th Feb) over the delays at a meeting of the City Council's Community Regeneration Overview and Scrutiny Committee.

Speaking after the meeting, Iain said:

"Small independent shops, such as those at Lane End Road and Burnage Lane, are an important part of our community and local economy. However, many struggle to survive. That is why we need this scheme to make the shopping area more attractive to shoppers to be carried out straight away."

"Tesco has been open for well over a year now, and yet the small shops nearby are still waiting for decent pavements and a much-needed spruce up. It is time the Council pulled their finger out and got on with the job."
