Lib Dems would make Manchester's Streets Cleaner, All-Year-Round!

Manchester's Liberal Democrats have condemned Labour's 100-Day Challenge, launched today, as a "pre-election publicity gimmick." Manchester's 33 Lib Dem Councillors are calling for a "Challenge Manchester 365-day" campaign to clean up the city and recycle more all year round, not just for the 100 days before the local elections.

Lib Dem Deputy Leader Councillor Paul Shannon said:

"The people of Manchester are not fooled. They know that this is a pre-election publicity gimmick by the Labour Party, trying to cover up their abysmal record on street-sweeping and the environment."

"Liberal Democrats want to see a cleaner, greener Manchester all year round. That means better street-cleaning services week in, week out. "

He continued:

"Lib Dems will make our streets Cleaner and Greener by spending extra on an environmental "Challenge Manchester 365-day" campaign. This campaign would spend more on improving footpaths across the city, thereby cutting trip claims; increase funding to reduce graffiti; extend the use of kerbside collections and would improve access to recycling for residents of the city's tower blocks."

"Lib Dems will take more action against those who dump rubbish in our City. We will target and prosecute offenders, publicising those who wreck our local environment. We will use CCTV and a targeted enforcement team to take the dumpers head on. We will also improve Labour's pitifully inadequate record on enforcing and collecting litter fines."

Cllr Shannon concluded:

"Labour only manage to deliver acceptable street-cleaning services for 100 days, or around 3 months each year. Lib Dems expect more Green Action for Manchester - if it can be done for 100 days, why not 365 days of the year!"
