Progress on Manchester's New Year's Eve Celebrations2.58.00pm GMT Thu 31st Jan 2008 Manchester Liberal Democrat Councillors voted at January's Council meeting for a full public consultation and options appraisal for New Year's Eve celebrations in Manchester this December 31st 2008. A Council committee will consider the costs, benefits and security aspects of a New Year's Eve event. Liberal Democrat Deputy Leader Councillor Paul Shannon, who proposed the motion on New Year's Eve celebrations, said: "Manchester Lib Dems are pleased that the Council have agreed to look at our proposal to review the city's New Year's arrangements. Today's decision authorises the Communities Scrutiny Committee to "investigate the costs, economic benefits, health & safety & security aspects of a New Year's event in Manchester" and for the Committee to consult with residents in the city centre." Cllr Shannon said: "I also welcome today's indication from the Council's leadership that they are willing to consider a tea-time celebration event suitable for families on New Year's Eve." "Many big cities across the UK and Europe hold successful and enjoyable New Year's Eve celebrations. I'm sure here in Manchester we would do it even better than them! Liberal Democrats want to see family-friendly enjoyable New Year's Eve celebrations in Manchester." End
