John Leech's EDM opposing ID cards in Manchester gets cross party support.

10.57.00am GMT Mon 23rd Mar 2009

Withington MP John Leech has welcomed the cross party support his Early Day Motion has received, which criticizes the government's controversial plans to pilot ID cards in Manchester.

Now over 40 parliamentarians from all parties support John Leech's stance against ID cards in Manchester,

John Leech said:

"I am pleased that MPs from all sides have backed my Early Day Motion. It is disappointing that the government seems hell bent on introducing ID Cards that will be an expensive waste of money and have no impact in dealing with crime and terrorism. The money would be far better spent on putting additional police officers on our streets."

GOVERNMENT PROPOSALS TO PILOT IDENTITY CARDS IN MANCHESTER

John Leech

That this House condemns the Government's proposal to consider piloting the identity card scheme in Manchester; notes with concern the wide disparities between Government and academic costing estimates of the scheme; believes that such funding would be better spent putting more police officers on the streets of Greater Manchester; notes the rising levels of public discontent over the scheme; and calls on the Government to halt the identity card scheme without delay.
