Manchester Liberal Democrat Leader Councillor Simon Ashley

The people of Manchester have overwhelmingly rejected proposals for an elected Mayor for the city. There were 3049 responses from residents plus 17 stakeholders, with 2055 (67.02%) supporting a Leader with Cabinet, 970 (31.64%) supporting an Elected Mayor, and 41 (1.34%) supporting neither. All 32 wards in the city had a majority against an elected Mayor.

Lib Dem Leader Simon Ashley said today:

"This result reinforces my previous opinion that the majority of Manchester residents don't want to see an elected mayor. It is a pity that the Government has forced us to waste £50,000 of Council Tax payers money consulting on something we already knew."
