English Defence League is not welcome in Manchester

Manchester Liberal Democrat Leader Councillor Simon Ashley

Manchester Lib Dem Leader Simon Ashley told a packed Council meeting that the English Defence League were not welcome in Manchester.

Councillors from all parties on the City Council supported a motion calling on the Home Secretary to ban the demo on Saturday. Cllr Ashley said,

"I support the right to peaceful protest and free speech, but not the rights of the EDL or anyone else to bring violence and intimidation to the streets of Manchester, or incite racial hatred."

Cllr Ashley added,

"I am glad that all three parties on the City Council could unite in its opposition to this demonstration. The EDL are not welcome in Manchester.
