Get Metrolink Back on Track!

2.47.58pm GMT Thu 16th Sep 2004

Manchester Liberal Democrat Leader Councillor Simon Ashley will this lunchtime speak at a City Centre rally to urge the Government to get Metrolink Back on track.

He will share a platform with 3 Labour party politicians unhappy about the Government's line on Metrolink- Council Leader Richard Leese, PTA Chair Roger Jones and Withington MP Keith Bradley.

In his speech, he will,

  • Praise the Evening News and her sister papers for highlighting the Metrolink Campaign,

  • Point out that Metrolink is quicker and greener than travelling by car where the current lines are.

  • Explain that congestion in Manchester is becoming a greater concern to local people, and that a modern European city needs a modern transport system like Metrolink.

  • Argue that the government can find resources to fund their priorities, like the Dome, the war in Iraq and transport infrastructure in London, and that Metrolink is Greater Manchester's priority.

  • Warn that the people of Greater Manchester will not forgive or forget a government who ignores their wishes.

Copies of the speech will be distributed at the rally or can be sent on request.
